First Lt. Doyle R. Campbell

First Lt. Doyle R. Campbell was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross by direction of the President for his heroism while participating in aerial flight over the Republic of Viet Nam on Feb. 27. 1964. On this date, Lt. Campbell was serving as aircraft commander of an armed UH-1B helicopter, when he voluntarily conducted low - level reconnaissance flights over a known Viet Cong company, identifying and attacking enemy positions that were impeding the progress of friendly ground forces.

On one such flight Lieutenant Campbell spotted an automatic weapon that was firing into the flank of another American helicopter. He responded immediately by leading a determined attack in which he personally silenced the weapon.

"After neutralizing the Viet Cong positions, Lieutenant Campbell continued to conduct low-level surveillance flights over suspected escape routes, displaying great courage and daring, as heavy ground fire was being received from the area.

"Lieutenant Campbell, a native of Dardanelle, Ark., entered the Army Jan. 22, 1962, with a regular Army commission via the University of Arkansas ROTC program."

Campbell, son of Mr. and Mrs. Courtney Campbell of Dardanelle, attended school at Dardanelle and attended Arkansas Tech before entering the University.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
REV. J. M. CAMPBELL
Rev. J. M. Campbell, Pastor of the First Presbyterian Church of Dardanelle, Ark., was born near Glascow, Scotland, in 1857. He came to America in 1880, locating in St. Joseph, Mo., where for several years he was engaged in the book and stationery business. He was married to Miss Annie C. Rusk in 1883.
Mr. Campbell entered the ministry in 1901, his first charge being Platt City, Mo. He was Pastor of the First Presbyterian Church of Plattsburg, Mo., until 1922, when he accepted a call to the First Presbyterian Church of Dardanelle, Ark. He died at a hospital in St. Joseph, Mo., September 23rd, 1926, following an operation four weeks previously.
Rev. Campbell is survived by his wife and three sons: Milton A. Campbell, of Princeton, N. J.; Rev. Harvey R. Campbell, of Clarksville, Ia.; Frank M. Campbell of Excelsoir Springs, Mo.
The local church has been wonderfully blessed in the personnel of its line of pastors, but none have had a stronger or more lasting hold on the affections of the congregation than Brother Campbell. He was a devout and deep Bible student, and loved to teach his people as a class is taught in a high-grade school. His hold on the young men with whom he came in contact has left a lasting impression on the life of this community.
W. R. Hayden.
